Trust for Chernobyl Children Activities

ACTIVITIES

Our ongoing events include running stalls at local Farmers’ Markets and Craft Fairs.  These make a small contribution to our funds but more importantly raise awareness of the Trust in our local area and hopefully encourage new host families and supporters.

In 2004, we facilitated the visit of a group of venture scouts to an orphanage in Radun, where they constructed an adventure playground which they had designed themselves and built from scratch.

The firemen at the Tonbridge Fire Station have been very active in supporting the activities of the Trust.  For several years they have hosted the children for a day at the fire station, playing games and thrilling them with tours of the fire engines, the uniforms and the hoses.  In 2007, the station mounted a big fundraising campaign and accompanied members of the Trust to the children’s hospice in Minsk where they were able to fit a new fire alarm system and then to the summer camp where they contributed handsomely to the building costs of the Stork Centre.

In 2007, a supper and theatre evening was held at the Castle Hill Cricket Club and an Art Exhibition and Sale at Sevenoaks School.  Both were very successful fundraising events and enabled us to contribute to the new kitchen and furnishings which helped complete the  Stork Centre.

In January 2009, we were fortunate to be able to invite Dr Anna Gorchakova, the Director of the Belarusian Childrens’ Hospice to give a presentation on the work of the Hospice to our local supporters.

Every year we send a large consignment of decorated Christmas shoeboxes to Belarus.  These contain basic items such as soap and toothbrushes, gloves and hats, toys, pens and colouring books.  These are distributed through the Hospice in Minsk to needy children and families under their care or in hospitals or orphanages.
